What exactly is Triphala... and how can it help you?
Triphala is a Sanskrit word that means “the three fruits.” It’s a nutritious food made from three berries: amalaki, haritaki, and bibhitaki. These three fruits make a wonderful, healing combination.

Amalaki: rejuvenating and sustaining.
Amalaki is revered as a powerful rejuvenating herb. In India this “wonder berry,” is also known as the “nurse herb” because it’s believed to strengthen the immune system and cool the body.
It’s also considered “the sustainer” because of its anti-inflammatory properties.
It is a strong natural antioxidant containing high levels of vitamin C. Commonly known as Indian gooseberry or amla, amalaki provides support and nutrition to the digestive tract, arteries, and liver.
Amalaki is widely used in Ayurvedic treatment since it is rich in many minerals and vitamins like Calcium, Phosphorus, Iron, Carotene, and Vitamin B Complex.
In Ayurveda, this fruit is used either alone or combined with other plants to treat many common ailments such as colds and fever and to support healthy digestion.
In the book, The Prime, Kulreet Chaudhary, MD says that amalaki is, “as effective as oral medication for treating diabetes . . . It normalizes blood sugar and stabilizes appetite so you’re not fighting peaks and valleys that can trigger binge eating, and it encourages the body to build lean muscles, which helps regulate blood sugar more efficiently.”
Dr. Chaudhary further states that amalaki helps the liver work more efficiently and provides antioxidants to nourish the body during detoxification, “It is such a good colon cleanser because it heals the mucosal lining and the nerves in the gut, so you can experience normal peristalsis again. Instead of forcing your colon to expel its contents, triphala helps the colon do what it is naturally supposed to do.”
In animal studies, amalaki has been shown to be effective against some of the harmful effects of heavy metals, helping to reduce liver damage from alcohol, and in decreasing the death rate from radiation sickness.
Haritaki is often ingested as a means to remove toxins from the body and purify the blood. It aids in proper assimilation of food and prevents bloating sensation and acidity.
Haritaki is a berry that’s known as the Tibetan "king of medicine." It’s the universal herb for keeping the digestive system in tip top shape.
Haritaki helps your body absorb food and prevents the sensation of bloating and acidity. It’s often used to remove toxins from the body and purify the blood.
It helps nurture healthy gut bacteria, which means a stronger digestive system and immune system.

“Bibhitaki is a rejuvenating herb that works as a tonic. It’s astringent, making it good for cleaning and tonify the bowels and works on the “plasma, muscle, bone, digestive, excretory, nervous and respiratory systems. It’s also effective for colds and coughs, and good for sore throats when taken with honey.”

Antioxidant, anti-stress, adaptogenic, anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, analgesic, anti-bacterial, wound healing, anti-mutagenic (a mutagen is an agent that changes genetic material), anti-cariogenic (a substance that counteracts the effects of a carcinogen or inhibits the development of cancer), radioprotective and chemopreventive effects.
A Swiss study was conducted on mice subjected to whole-body radiation. The mice were fed triphala to investigate the mortality of the irradiated animals, as well as the DNA damage at the cellular level. It found that the mortality from radiation was reduced by 60% in mice fed with triphala. The study concluded that triphala protected the irradiated mice by inhibiting oxidative damage in cells and organs, and seems to have potential to develop into an herbal supplement that can protect from radiation.

Beware of useless, low-quality triphala supplements
Unfortunately, most supplements don’t have the doses you need to get results. They may have insubstantial amounts of the active components, or you may be getting little more than a capsule filled with powders chock full of heavy metals.
